Electrical Power Expansion Project

Major U.S. Baker Increasing It's Capacity

Electrical Power Expansion Project

Emerson Process Management dispatched an Electrical Power Engineer to the facility to review the existing single line drawings and to bring them up-to-date. This confirmed the client's concern that additional power would be required to support the new production lines. During the plant visit the engineer suggested a conceptual design that would resolve the problem. The design incorporated a new 480V substation. It also included a new, double - ended switchgear lines - up in an outdoor powerhouse, to be served by two, 2500 KVA transformers supplied by the local utility company.

Each 3000A bus was designed to be served by a 3000A main breaker and separated by a 3000A tie breaker. In the case of transformer failure the design provided for the plant to be served from the remaining source by opening the associated main breaker and closing the tie. Emerson Process Management was awarded the project to provide a complete engineering package for contractor installation, including bid packages, and to coordinate all activity with the local utility.

Utility Capacity & Expansion Study

Emerson Process Management dispatched a lead mechanical engineer to make a complete study of the existing mechanical utility systems, including electrical power, steam, plant and instrument air, and process water.

Emerson Process Management analyzed capacity utilization for every piece of equipment in each of the utility systems. This included chillers, boilers, compressors, transformers and the like.

Once this analysis was complete Emerson Process Management provided the client with a report that outlined which equipment had excess capacity and which equipment did not. Recommendations were also made regarding expanding the utilities to match the production expansion needs.

Back to Success Stories

Problem:

One of the largest, private label bakery companies in the U.S. was expanding two of its bakeries. In one bakery they were concerned that the power supply was insufficient to handle the new production lines. In the other bakery they were concerned that all of the utility systems were insufficient to handle an expansion.

Solution:

At the first bakery Emerson Process Management was hired to evaluate its electrical power system and engineer a redesign that could accommodate the new production lines.

In the second bakery Emerson Process Management was hired to evaluate their utility systems and make recommendations for meeting the needs of the expansion.
